A bridge connects teeth at either side of the empty space of one missing tooth (or molar), or several. A bridge is fixed permanently to the prepared teeth so the crowns can be bonded perfectly. The missing teeth in between are also called ‘dummies’. A bridge is always a custom-made creation which requires several appointments. Besides the bridges as mentioned above, there is also the so called acid etch bridge, which is particularly made for one single front tooth. This bridge can be placed when the adjacent teeth are in pristine order. The missing tooth is made out of porcelain and carries small wings at both sides, made out of glass-fiber strengthened material. These wings are bonded at the back to both adjacent teeth. This requires a minimum of cutting of these intact teeth. An acid etching bridge can also be quite easily removed, without causing any damage.
